How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

As exciting as the holiday season is, for many people it can be a struggle.  Not only does the busyness of the season bring on extra stress, but it also brings extra parties and treats followed by unnecessary and unwanted holiday weight gain.  While it’s okay to enjoy the time of year and occasionally treat yourself, you really do need to keep yourself in check if you want to be happy and HEALTHY at the start of the New Year.  So here are a few tips to help you stay on track and avoid the dreaded holiday weight gain.

7 Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

1.) Schedule Every Workout.

Don’t leave your workouts up to chance.  Sit down and plan out time for each one, and put it on your calendar.  Treat it as if it’s a very important meeting you can’t miss.  If you leave it up to chance or when you “get around to it”… you won’t.

 

2.) Eat Protein Prior to the Party.

The most dangerous thing you can do is go to a party with an empty stomach!  When you’re hungry and in an environment with all kinds of treats and indulgences, you’re more likely to make poor choices.  By filling up on lean protein prior to the party, your stomach will be satisfied, and you’ll be less affected by all of the temptations around you.

3.) Send Guests Away with All of the Left-Over’s.

If it’s not in the house, you can’t eat it!  Simple as that!  Enjoy your meals while you’re eating them, but skip the second helpings.

 

4.) Go Harder!

Hit your workouts even harder this time of year. When you know you have a party coming up, put in the extra effort to burn those extra calories.  Knowing that you worked so hard may even make you less likely to overindulge, so you don’t undo all of the progress you just made.

 

5.) Chill out on the Booze.

Two words: empty calories.  And wouldn’t you rather spend those on something more filling and satisfying anyways?  Keep it to a one-drink minimum or skip it all together and stay hydrated with a seltzer water and lime.

 

6.) Get an Accountability Coach!

While we’re likely to break a promise to ourselves, most people would never break a promise to someone they care about.  We hate nothing more than to disappoint the people that mean something to us.  So, find a workout buddy and accountability coach to help keep you in check this holiday season, and make a promise to them about what behaviors you will and will not engage in.

7.) Set a January 1 Fitness Goal.

Why wait until the New Year?  Set a health and fitness goal to be achieved BEFORE the New Year, and share it with everyone you know for extra accountability and to nix holiday weight gain.  Rather than slacking off, finish the year strong!

Two University of Colorado students are facing multiple felony charges after campus police say they provided marijuana-laced brownies to unsuspecting classmates and their professor on Friday, sending three to the hospital and sickening five others.

The two students – Thomas Ricardo Cunningham, 21, and Mary Elizabeth Essa, 19 – were arrested Saturday night on suspicion of second-degree assault, inducing the consumption of controlled substances by fraudulent means, conspiracy to commit second-degree assault and conspiracy to induce the consumption of controlled substances by fraudulent means.

All four charges are felonies.

“There could be prison time in this case,” CU police spokesman Ryan Huff said at a Sunday news conference. “This is something we take very seriously.”

CU police responded to the Hellems Arts and Sciences building around 10:20 a.m. Friday on a report of a history professor complaining of dizziness and losing consciousness, Huff said. Paramedics transported the instructor, who has not been identified, to the hospital.

Around 4 p.m., a student’s mother notified CU police that her daughter, who was in that class, was having an anxiety attack and was at a local hospital, according to police.

On Saturday, a second student told CU police she felt like she was going to “black out” after class. She, too, was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to CU police.

CU police say their investigation revealed that the three hospitalized victims — and five other classmates — were suffering from the effects of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

Police say Cunningham and Essa baked THC-laced brownies and brought them to class as part of a “bring food day,” but didn’t tell their classmates or professor that there were drugs in the baked goods.

CU police say the interviewed both Cunningham and Essa on Saturday and they “confirmed the brownies contained marijuana.”

“It was planned,” Huff said. “They knew what they were doing.”

Police said they have interviewed the professor and 11 of the 12 students in the class. Three were hospitalized, five others became ill and two did not eat the brownies.

The three who were hospitalized have been released.

Boulder campus spokesman Bronson Hilliard characterized the incident as “a stupid, irresponsible act” and a breach of trust.

Along with facing possible felony charges, Cunningham and Essa will be subject to CU’s internal discipline process. Hilliard said that, given the severity of the incident, the two could be suspended or expelled.

Hilliard said that, while students will occasionally share marijuana-laced baked goods with friends at parties, he’s never heard of students feeding them to unsuspecting classmates.

““Anybody who thinks this cute, anybody who thinks this is funny, is going to face pretty serious sanctions,” he said.

Hilliard noted that giving marijuana to people without their knowledge is still illegal under Colorado’s recently approved Amendment 64, which, when it goes into effect, will legalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Both Cunningham and Essa remained at the Boulder County Jail on Sunday. Bond had not yet been set in the case.

The current unemployment rate in this country is 7.9%.  Some states, such as Michigan and Nevada are as high as 9.1% and 11.5%, respectively.  My home state of South Carolina has an unemployment rate of 8.6%.

5 Ways to Stay Positive and Maintain Positive Thoughts

Keep positive thoughts consistent with your goals and keep your mind on what you want to do and the person you want to be. Here are five ideas you can use to help you to stay positive and optimistic:

First, resolve in advance that, no matter what happens, you will not allow it to get you down. You will respond in a constructive way. You will take a deep breath, relax and look into the situation for whatever good it may contain. When you make this decision in advance, you mentally prepare yourself so that you are not knocked off balance when things go wrong, as they inevitably will.

Second, neutralize any negative thoughts or emotions by developing positive thoughts all the time. Repeat positive affirmations such as, “I feel healthy, I feel happy, I feel terrific!”  As you go about your job, say to yourself, “I like myself and I love my work!” Say things like, “Today is a great day; it’s wonderful to be alive!” The Law of Expression says that, “Whatever is expressed, is impressed.” Whatever you say to yourself or others is impressed more deeply into your subconscious mind and is more likely not only to be repeated, but to become a permanent part of your personality.

Third, look upon the inevitable setbacks that you face as being temporary, specific and external and stay positive. Look upon the negative situation as a single event that is not indicative or connected with other potential events and which is largely caused by external factors over which you can have little control. Simply refuse to see the event as being in any way permanent, pervasive or a personal slight on your own competence or ability and maintain your positive thoughts as you move forward;

Fourth, remember that it’s impossible to learn and grow and become a success without the inevitable adversities and difficulties you must contend with and rise above in order to become a better person. So, welcome each difficulty by saying, “That’s good!” and then look into the situation to find the something good or beneficial that it contains in order to stay positive.

Fifth, and finally, keep your thoughts on your goals and dreams, and on the person you’re working toward becoming and the things that you are striving for. The University of Maryland will join the Big Ten Conference, ending a nearly six-decade affiliation with the Atlantic Coast Conference, in a move university leaders believe will provide financial stability to an athletic department that has recently found itself in tumult.

Following negotiations through the weekend, the school’s Board of Regents approved a proposal to join the Big Ten on Monday morning. The conference formally and unanimously accepted. Maryland’s move to the Big Ten will begin in the 2014-15 school year.

“We just got the faxed approval letter,” a Maryland official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The school will announce the move in a 3 p.m. news conference in the Stamp Student Union, followed by a national teleconference at 4 p.m. University President Wallace Loh, Chancellor William E. “Brit” Kirwan, Athletics Director Kevin Anderson and Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney are expected to address the media.

Rutgers University is to become the Big Ten’s 14th member Tuesday.

The Board “overwhelmingly endorsed” the decision. Kirwan did not vote because he is the chancellor.

“There was a lot that went into it,” Kirwan said. “Obviously there’s the emotion of being at the University of Maryland and in the ACC all of these years. But the reality is that the world is changing, and there are benefits of Big Ten membership.”

Kirwan acknowledged that the shifting landscape of college athletics forces schools to prioritize long-term financial stability over preserving traditional rivalries.

“Most people, when they first hear about it, think, ‘Why would you do it? It doesn’t make sense?’” Kirwan said. “But the more you think about it and understand the advantages and think about the way the world’s changing, and the ACC isn’t the ACC any more.”

Speaking with media members before a public committee meeting on education policy in Baltimore, regent Patricia Florestano said the board discussed Maryland’s history as a founding member of the ACC, but that ultimately the prospect of increased revenue from the Big Ten — which has its own money-making television network — was too tempting to pass up.

“The question is, what’s the future?” Florestano said. “We’ve got to look to the future.”

According to Florestano, there was a “long discussion” that led to a vote that was “not unanimous.” A second person, who requested anonymity based on the situation’s sensitivity, said the vote among regents was “almost” unanimous. A person said Sunday only a simple majority of the 16-member board was needed for the measure to pass.

Regent Tom McMillen, a former Maryland basketball player and U.S. Congressman, voted against the proposal, citing what he felt was a rushed process.

“I’m not saying the substance wasn’t meritorious,” McMillen said in a telephone interview. “There are arguments for it. But when you rush a process, it’s antithetical. There was sympathy in some points, but it’s all about money. It’s all about money. That’s what it is. . . .

“We should table it, and have input from those opposed to have all points of view. I would have loved to have heard from the coaches, the ACC, the players — but that’s not the way it works.”

According to McMillen, “three or four” regents were not present to vote.

Florestano said the board of regents “perceived” that Maryland’s financial future in the Big Ten was brighter, but that members are “still debating” the exact figures.

“I didn’t see paperwork to make one case or the other,” McMillen said.

Talks between the Big Ten and Maryland progressed over the weekend, culminating in a Monday morning private telephone conference in which the regents voted and approved the proposal, according to multiple reports. The move immediately angered some alumni and fans by leaving behind longstanding rivalries and tradition within the ACC.

“Sad day to be a real [T]erp,” Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith, a former Terrapin, wrote on his Twitter account. Smith pointed out the astonishing change for Maryland athletics over the past 18 months:the retirement of basketball coach Gary Williams, the firing of alum Ralph Friedgen as football coach and now completely new matchups against unfamiliar opponents.

“No Friedgen, no Gary, new competition that I can’t relate to,” Smith wrote. “No more UVA, Duke, NC talk. That’s weird. I still love the campus and the programs we have there, but I feel like if I were a recruit again I would’ve never chose MD because the reasons above are why I went there. Not being able to relate to anything at the school you graduated from is crazy.”

Earlier this year, Maryland eliminated seven varsity sports due to the department’s multimillion-dollar deficit. Now, the school will also be subject to a $50 million exit fee from the ACC, which the conference put in place just months ago because it was wary of other leagues poaching its schools — a move that has become the norm in college athletics over the past decade. During a September vote among university presidents, Loh was one of two to vote against the fee, citing “legal and philosophical grounds,” claiming that the fee would not hold up in court.

The Big Ten has said it distributed $284 million in revenue to its 12 schools this fiscal year, or roughly $23.7 million per institution. The ACC, meantime, announced a 15-year, $3.6-million extension of its television agreement with ESPN in May, a deal that it projected would yield $15 million for each member institution.

There is, though, the potential for more growth in the Big Ten, which will have its rights up for bid again in 2017 — a decade before the ACC again goes to market. Adding Maryland and Rutgers also gives the Big Ten access to the Washington D.C. and New York/New Jersey television markets.
